Criminal Policy Directorate
I should begin by saying that the Government is committed to reducing crime and the fear of crime and believes that the use of CCTV can have a positive effect on this, particularly when used as part of a wider crime reduction strategy. As you may know £170M have been made available by the Government over the next three years for CCTV in Town or City Centres, Car Parks, residential areas, other crime “hot spots” and to modernise existing systems. The first round of funding is already underway, with the next round planned for early next year.
It is important not to lose sight of the need to ensure CCTV is used fairly and lawfully and with due regard for civil and personal liberties, particularly in residential areas. All successful schemes should operate under a code of practice and adhere to the principle of the Data Protection Act 1998.
You can obtain further information regarding CCTV on the Home Office Web site
